Faika Al Hasan
Born in Bahrain

Faika was born in Manama and graduated with a degree in Economics from the University of Baghdad. She later studied Fine Arts and painting in Bahrain and Lebanon.

Faika has been active as an artist for so long. In her early career her work centered on depictions of women and often also mothers, with the body taking centre stage. Since then Faika Al Hassan has shifted to a more experimental approach, in which small human figures inhabit large and anonymous spaces. While not overtly political, Faika Al Hassan’s paintings at times contain allusions to the politics of power and violence. The overriding message though, is that of our own insignificance in the larger scheme of things. Faika is passionate about portraying the intrinsic and wholesome beauty of a woman through her paintings. It is her belief that every woman radiates beauty despite all the difficulties she endures throughout her lifetime. Faika works on mixed mediums and particularly likes using charcoal and acrylic in her paintings. "I love the color black," she said. "People misunderstand it and say that it shows a person in a lot of pain but I just love the color black and I enjoy painting in black and white.”

Faika has exhibited extensively in the Middle East and the West.
