Kevork Mourad
January 24 - February 25, 2010

Courtyard Gallery and Rafia Gallery were proud to host an evening of art & music.

"The epic of Gilgamesh" by Syrian artist Kevork Mourad & Syrian clarinetist & composer Kinan Azmeh.

Kevork Mourad has invented a new kind of performance, blending live images with prepared animation, in counterpoint to live music. The result is art that transforms itself before viewers' eyes, alive with a breathtaking spontaneity.

In Mourad's exhibition, the same kind of energy informs his canvas-based paintings, temporally fixed objects that nevertheless seem to move, brought to life by the elegant flourish of Mourad's lines and the shimmering complexity of his colors. Human figures, when present, are rarely static. It is usually when they are at their least concrete that Mourad invests them with the most movement, as they float into or across a canvas. Even his landscapes move, through the use of color and the play with the transparency-and opacity-of light.
