Retrospective: Hassan Alameddine
May 10 - June 5, 2010

Courtyard Gallery showcased the works of late Lebanese artist Hassan Alameddine.

Hassan Alameddine was born in Beirut in 1933 and pursued studies in Business and Economics, going on to work at the Lebanese Ministry of Finance for over three decades. Nurturing a lifelong passion for art, the young Alameddine would sketch landscapes of Lebanon 's Chouf, Baalbek and Sannine areas, among others. It was only in later life that he decided to take up painting on a full time basis, largely due to the love and support of his wife, Janan. The Impressionists, using light as inspiration, essentially influence his oeuvre.

In 2001, Alameddine suffered a stroke that left the right side of his body paralyzed, but with the encouragement of Janan, he began painting with his left hand and continued painting romantic landscapes and naturalistic portraits in his preferred medium, oil. "Nothing makes us greater than a great pain," he once said, quoting French poet Alfred de Musset. Janan organized a premiere exhibition of Alameddine's works at the Glass Hall in Beirut 's Ministry of Tourism in 2004, which drew the attention of intellectuals such as Said Akl and Dr. Salwa El-Amine. Alameddine passed away in 2007 and Janan has since organized a number of exhibitions around the world in a tribute to his extraordinary willpower and distinguished talent.
